Applications for student travel 2016

From 2 November 2015, a new online SSTS application process is being introduced for schools within the Opal network, coinciding with the introduction of the School Opal card. Schools outside the Opal network should continue to process the existing blue SSTS application forms and send them to the appropriate transport operators. Most parents, guardians and students won't need to apply for a school travel pass for 2016 if they have already been given a school student travel pass for the current year. Mr Xia visits Colo Vale!

Jerry Xia (pronounced Shaa) is a teacher from China engaged by the NSW Department of Education as part of the Confucius Program. 2016 school funding allocations

All NSW public schools are currently being advised of their 2016 Resource Allocation Model (RAM) funding. RAM distributes funding based on individual needs of students and schools, and gives schools greater flexibility to make financial decisions. The way schools use their RAM funding will vary based on local needs. Some support will be for the entire school, and some will be for particular groups of students or individual students. Kangaroo March

On Tuesday 6th October all students went to The Colo Vale Community Hall to see the re-enactment of The Kangaroo March. We were away from school from 11:00 am until 1:15 pm. It has been 100 years since the original Kangaroo March. We walked down to The Community Hall in class groups. It was really hot and it took about 20 minutes to get there. Cricket NSW Visit

Last week some cricketers from Cricket NSW visited our school. We went with them over to Jurd Park to play some great games! Everyone participated in the games that were designed to improve our catching and batting skills. The games were really fun! Afterwards, the cricketers signed a poster for each student to take home. Opera House Recorder

On Tuesday our school's recorder group went into Sydney to play in The Festival of Instrumental Music at The Opera House. We went into Sydney from Mittagong by train. During the day we rehearsed with our conductor Susan Sukar to prepare for the evening's concert. We did other fun things in Sydney including exploring The Royal Botanical Gardens and The Museum of Contemporary Art. We all ate dinner together at the restaurant City Extra. The concert was amazing! Indigenous Rangers Visit Colo Vale

Yesterday, we were lucky enough to have 5 Indigenous rangers from the National Parks and Wildlife Services working throughout the day with all our students from K-6. On Thursday the 11th of June the Noble Challenge Team went to Campbelltown Stadium to play at the Group 6 All Schools Carnival. We played two games against St Anthony's Primary School and St Andrews Public School and won both of them. We all received medallions to wear with pride! ANZAC Celebration

Mr Freeman, together with 5/6F, prepared, rehearsed and led a moving and thoughtful assembly last Friday. We were delighted to welcome Mr John Stead, President of the local Community Association and driving force behind the establishment of the new Colo Vale War Memorial to address our gathering. He spoke of the very unique connection that we have to the centenary with one lady having taken gumnuts from Colo Vale as part of her wreath which she laid at Gallipoli this year. Dedication of Colo Vale War Memorial

ANZAC Day 2015 Dedication of Colo Vale War Memorial ~ Saturday, 18thApril As we are well aware, this year is the centenary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli. Our local Colo Vale community, led by Mr John Stead, has worked so hard to build a new War Memorial in front of the Memorial Hall to coincide with this 100-year celebration. Farewell Mrs Swanbury

After 24 years of committed service to Colo Vale PS, Teri Swanbury will retire from the Department of Education and Communities (DEC) on Tuesday 2 April 2015. Teri has an historical and deep family connection to our school. Both of her children also attended Colo Vale PS as children. And indeed, Teri's parents were also part of our school history. Norma Oliver, her mother was the previous school administrative manager, known as the School Secretary, and father Ted was the General Assistant, all those years ago. Much has changed in education... Fluro Walk-a-thon

Last Friday Colo Vale students had a walk-a-thon at school to raise money for new books in the library. Students wore fluro clothes and accessories. There were lots of different activities to do around the playground. We did parachute activities, dancing, skipping, basketball and hopscotch. Last Thursday four teams from Colo Vale went to Robertson to compete in The Noble Challenge and Hindmarsh Cup! All teams played well and had a great time meeting superstar Nathan Hindmarsh. Cross Country

Last Friday we had our school cross country for 2015 at Jurd Park. It was very exciting and everyone enjoyed it! Students aged 8 years and up ran with their particular age groups and started from different areas around Jurd Park. Students aged 4-7 years enjoyed completing a fun obstacle course in the middle of Jurd. Everyone who ran tried their best and were able to walk if they got a bit puffed. Hindmarsh Cup and Noble Challenge

We have started training for The Noble Challenge and Hindmarsh Cup. Both teams have been doing drills and practising their ball skills. Everyone is excited and can't wait to play! Handball Competition

The SRC Sports Committee have organised a handball competition for students in Years 3-6. Competing students have demonstrated some amazing tricks on the court. We haven't finished yet as there is to be a final competition played. BBQ at Bunnings

Parents and staff members gathered together on Sunday to sell sausages and cold drinks at The P and C BBQ fundraiser at Bunnings in Mittagong. The day was a great success raising approximately $910 to go towards paying for the Mathletics program that is used by all classes. Much hard work went into organising all the details of the day including purchasing the food that was to be cooked and sold, organising equipment, liaising with Bunnings and coordinating volunteers. World Read Aloud Day

Today is World Read Aloud Day and to celebrate Colo Vale students gathered in the library to listen to some popular picture books and short stories. World Read Aloud Day is a day where the special practice of reading aloud to others and listening to stories is celebrated. Clean Up Australia Day

Last Friday Colo Vale students did their part for our environment by participating in Clean Up Australian Day activities. Students worked in class groups and were accompanied by a member of the Environment Committee. Each class had an area of the school and/or Jurd Park to clean and make spotless! Students filled their rubbish bags with all sorts of litter that is best put in the bin rather than floating around our playground. First Band Practice for the year!

Today Colo Vale Public School's band has had its first practice for the term with Mrs Donaldson our wonderful conductor! Everybody remembered to bring their instruments and was eager to get started after a long break from last year. Being a band member is lots of fun but it is also a lot of hard work. Swimming Carnival Success!

Recently Colo Vale Public School held our annual school swimming carnival. The students participated in novelty activities and swimming races including freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and relay races. Learning Collaboration Committee Skips up a Storm!

Yesterday during lunch students in years K-2 were invited to join the Learning Collaboration Committee for a fun skipping session. Senior students provided skipping instruction to some bouncy pop music for younger students to follow along to. Welcome back to 2015 at Colo Vale Public School!

School resumes on Wednesday 28 January for Grades 1-6. The School Administration Office is open and accepting new enrolments from Tuesday 27 January.
